It’s a brand new year at the Old School! “Classes” begin this month! With the persistent cold weather we will delay opening until after the third weekend in March. Let’s hope Spring warmth arrives really soon!
I cannot believe the winter months and holidays have gone by so quickly. Seems like it was just Christmas, New Years, and now Valentines has passed and St Patty’s is creeping up and Easter will be here before you know it. How does that happen? The older I get the quicker the year goes by. I don’t want to miss a thing but it all comes and goes before I can blink.
We use the winter season to visit family, catch up on chores, rest, or even start a new project. I also have a small bookkeeping business and so I stay busy with it all year long. Fortunately it is portable and so it travels with me wherever I go. LeRoy, of course, has band jobs throughout the year so our calendar is never really empty. We’ve managed to have about several snows this year so some of that time was spent indoors with coffee or hot cocoa and under blankets with the dogs. My other favorite past time when it snows is cooking. You can just about guarantee a pot of soup is on the stove. We favor a Keto diet so I’m usually on the hunt for a dessert that meets these requirements.

I’m excited about so many wine trails, Spring events and antiquing opportunities that exist all around us. Our location to all of these makes the Old School a great hub for a wonderful weekend.
Hermann is just a 25 minute drive east of our location and they are already posting several fun events for Spring. We have a new antique consignment mall in Linn just 20 miles down the road, and the Rosebud Grand Antique Mall is a little further south out Hwy 50… they host a huge store sale each second Saturday from 9-5 and people are lined out the door. Bring a UHaul for the stash you will find there!
The closest event coming up is the Wurstfest in Hermann March 23-24. It is a weekend for the best sausage festival around and you can certainly find your share of German fare. Super fun to watch is the Wiener Dog Derby. You can drink some fine beers, enjoy spirits at nearby distilleries and of course there are many wineries for whatever suits your taste. Another close by event is the Farmers’ Table Wine Trail on April 6th. This wine trail features pairings with food products from local farmers. It is $30 per person and from the looks of the menu, you will probably gain a few pounds, but it will be well worth it. Advanced purchase of tickets is required. Just one month over is the Wild Bacon Wine Trail the weekend of May 4-5. Same advance reservations required. Our rates are super affordable, come stay one or two nights and take in some antique shopping as well. I can’t think of a more delicious way to spend a weekend!
Plan a ladies weekend with us and you would be surprised at out affordable it is especially when you room share. Your money can go a long way on shopping and wine tasting when your suite is so affordable. We’ve had men stay as well! A retired firefighters group came this last year on motorcycles and had a great time. We have two awesome bar and grill restaurants nearby that offer some delicious food and drinks. Hiking, golfing, and fishing opportunities are all nearby for our outdoor enthusiasts. We also love hosting bachelorette groups, retirees that travel together, BFF’s, couples, families… our space accommodates many needs.
We are looking forward to seeing you this year. The Old School is 143 years old this year and is just waiting for your story to be a part of this unique history!
